scene: Enter Brushstroke, and turn right behind a curtain to find eight Sushi-philes seated at Mr. Ichimura's bleached wood sushi bar
sip: Brushstroke's creative cocktails can be ordered (ahem, the Hommage), or else a wonderful sake selection served in glass teapots, wine, and Japanese beer (including Coedo, which we were THRILLED to see)
savor: Omakase only, bitches
sit: There's only 8 seats, and Mr. Ichimura is so meticulous he makes sure the staff spaces them appropriately
scene: Everyone from NYU students, to tourists, to Anne Hathaway comes here for their ramen fill. Nicer ambiance than your average East Village noodle spot.
sip: Mediocre wine, decent Japanese beer & sake by the glass and bottle
savor: RAMEN! Any kind will do, but the Miso Ramen is a personal Pants favorite
sit: Solo at the communal table, with a group at a cushy banquette, or if you are a lucky, one of few tables for 2.
scene: long, bustling counter with front row seats for the action, and some tables as well; no bar area, very plain design, some rocking tunes playing; the narrow space helps with the bustling vibe that is missing from the decor
sip: Sake to me
savor: salmon on crispy rice; toro with caviar; sushi
sit: With a sushi afficionado, at the counter; with expense account people at a table
scene: cozy and vibrant at the same time; dark walls with contrasting white bar seating that literally highlights the food show; quite noisy, nosey, so don't creep your neighbors' convo
sip: White Lambrusco; huge, slightly intimidatingly sized wine list, but plenty of delicious offerings for decent prices; staff is knowledgable and happy to assist with a selection;
savor: mushrooms with fried egg; spaghetti with chiles, ramps, and breadcrumbs; brussel sprouts; olive oil cake
sit: with someone who likes to share food; a date; not recommended for anyone who will dishing up a side of gossip, the tables are pretty close together
spend: $$
