An Ode to the Sistermoon

A Sistermoon, quite simply put, is a vacation with your sister.  I am not sure when exactly we coined the term, but our proclivity towards choosing hotels and destinations more favored by romantic couples than Spring Breakers was most apparent to us for the first time on the beach in Phuket Thailand.  Faced with a choice between two hotels, one that was described as “family friendly” and one that was over-the-top luxurious and private, we were pulling up our loungers in between the “just married” bikini faster than you can say “kiddie pool”. Since Daryl and I are five years apart, we got closer a little later than some siblings, when I was already out of college, and she was still in it.  It had never occured to us to travel just the two of us, with all of our past travel expriences together being in the context of the whole family.  The first Sistermoon was a trip to Anguilla precipitated  on by a break-up that left me in pieces, the only remedy, diagnosed shrewdly by my still-in-college sister, was a drastic change of scenery and intense relaxation.

One year later, Daryl was turning 21 and a trip to Las Vegas was in order, and I gifted by throwing her out of a plane for her first sky-diving experience. When she studied abroad in Australia I traveled 17 hours by myself to meet her in Thailand for a week.  Other Sistermooon destinations include the Bahamas, Amsterdam, the South of France, and Hong Kong.

It is imortant to us as we move through life and begin making travel memories with our partners that we still take some time to explore the world together as well.  We expect the same things out of a travel experience and get excited by planning our hotels, meals and activities together, and all the research that goes into those decisions. Next week we will be on the beaches of Tulum for our first Sistermoon since Daryl had an actual honeymoon, sipping our margaritas and getting massages with all of the other couples.  See you on the flip…

Can’t say we never taught you anything!  We challenge you to use “sistermoon” in a sentence, ha ha…
